DRAGONFLY COVE

Welcome to our Dragonfly Cove Care Home and our Nook and a Book reading corner. This blog is a living, growing record of our kiddos during this beautiful time in our lives together. This kind of blogging is as personal and intimate as writing a journal or diary. Memories and experiences are the greatest gifts we can bestow on our children. Here we document and share the unique experiences, ideas and inspirations enriching our lives and the children in our care. You will see various pictures of our kiddos learning through play and inquiry in every day life♥

A couple of ideas and quotes related to our blog and growth...

"Life isn't about finding yourself; It's about creating yourself."
"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass; it's learning to dance in the rain"

My passion and love of learning stems from a belief that learning is a life-long process. We strive to be open and adaptable to the many changes and challenges of everyday life. I try to model continued learning as the children see me reading, studying and implementing new, creative adaptations and theory to our home indoor and outdoor environments and lives. By giving them these roots, my hope is they will also follow a path of inquiry and know as students of life, they will always be learning and growing♥

Here is an excerpt from "How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years" which directly pertains to our blog here...

"a means of sharing perspectives with parents and colleagues. When families and others are invited to contribute to the documentation and share their own interpretations, it can provide even more insights that children, educators, and families can return to, reflect on, and remember in order to extend learning."

We love reading your thoughts and comments! Thanks so much for embarking on this special, memorable journey with us... lots of love♥

How can our love go wrong if... we start the New Year right...

Here's how we set up a rockin'
New Years Eve
for a house full of kids:D
 Starting the new year right!

The dining room set up with provocations to engage the kiddos in cooperative play or individual challenges:)

Here's one of my kiddos super proud to have completed the marble maze... it's a challenge to get all three balls through little holes from the outer rings to the inner rings:D
The new foosball table was a family gift this year and has had a lot of action...
The kids often switch up the rules of the connect 4 game to make up their own games with patterns etc. for open ended play.
This labyrinth was a new acquisition this year as well and no one has completed it yet... love a new challenge:)

The Color Match Wheels Puzzle is a challenging matching game.  It contains 7 wheels and on each wheel there are 6 different colors dots. The objective is to place all the wooden wheels back into the box in a way that all the adjacent dots have the same color.

The honeycombs and the wood dominoes are both matching games that require all adjacent pieces to match as well... two different levels for the different ages of our kiddos.

These cups get set up in many creative ways... playing the classic game of "cups", sculptures in cups and today... there was also cups set up in pyramids for soft dart target practice;)

These bright, beautiful crackers made me smile when I found them... a nice tradition I like to carry on from year to year...

   One minute to midnight,
One minute to go,
One minute to say goodbye,
Before we say hello.
Lets start the new year right,
12 O’clock tonight,
When they dim the lights lets begin.
Kissing the old year out,
Kissing the New Year in.
Lets watch the old year die,
With a fond goodbye,
And our hopes as high as a kite.
How can our love go wrong if,
We start the New Year Right.

Observing Romjul... It's a wonderful life...

This has been another peaceful day of Romjul...
It has been lovely... the kids playing in the snow... drying the cloths by the fire... sipping hot chocolate... so hygge... drying the clothes by the fire always reminds me of the scene in one of my favourite movies, It's a wonderful life!

Romjul (middle Christmas), is a Norwegian term
for the period between Christmas and New Years Day.

Romjula is...
a peaceful time...
home sheltering...
 holiday activities...
quietly working on projects...
school free...
special family visits...
holiday foods...
enjoying family time...
tranquil living...
reflection♥

Outdoor activities are followed by hygge to gather together in comfort and warmth.
We prepare for Romjula ahead of time by stocking up on the foods and comforts of the season.
Even the Christmas presents we exchange also go to support the period of Romjul, such as clothes, candles, blankets, beverages, books, games and more recently, electronics.

Bread... that this house may never know hunger.
Salt... that life may always have flavor.
And wine... that joy and prosperity may reign forever.
~Mary and George Bailey

... and now we are warming up near the fire... sipping hot chocolate... eating mandarin oranges with baked goods and enjoying family time...  It truly is a wonderful life♥

Finding Hygge in the everyday...

I hope you have been having a wonderful time celebrating the holiday...
with your family and friends or quietly by yourself !

Our plan today was to pull out the toboggans and take the kids sledding...
We skipped straight to the hot chocolate in these frigid, arctic temperatures!
The chocolate was delicious and the sparkling,
fluffy snow out the window made me feel incredibly happy!

I've taken out books from the library by Tasha Tudor.
She also wrote one of my favorite Christmas books called "Take Joy".
I've added some of my favourite titles by her to my wish list on Amazon for some future occasion...
I want to impart some of the wisdom I've gained from her musings...

 Take Joy!
Take Joy in time with those you love...
Take Joy in everyday moments...
Take Joy in this beautiful life!
Hygge for me has always been in finding the extraordinary in the ordinary...
There is so much to enjoy in simplicity♥

A Christmas Carol For Children ~ Poet M. Luther

A Christmas Carol For Children
~ Poet M. Luther

Good news from heaven the angels bring,
Glad tidings to the earth they sing:
To us this day a child is given,
To crown us with the joy of heaven.

This is the Christ, our God and Lord,
Who in all need shall aid afford:
He will Himself our Saviour be,
From sin and sorrow set us free.

To us that blessedness He brings,
Which from the Father's bounty springs:
That in the heavenly realm we may
With Him enjoy eternal day.

All hail, Thou noble Guest, this morn,
Whose love did not the sinner scorn!
In my distress Thou come to me:
What thanks shall I return to Thee?

Were earth a thousand times as fair,
Beset with gold and jewels rare,
She yet were far too poor to be
A narrow cradle, Lord, for Thee.

Ah, dearest Jesus, Holy Child!
Make Thee a bed, soft, undefined,
Within my heart, that it may be
A quiet chamber kept for Thee.

Praise God upon His heavenly throne,
Who gave to us His only Son:
For this His hosts, on joyful wing,
A blessed New Year of mercy sing.

Happy jólabókaflóð!

Today is a Hygge day...
cuddling with Christmas stories...
setting up our table for Christmas dinner on
Christmas Eve...
Togetherness is such a blessing♥

Here are some of the wonderful titles
I find so comforting year after year♥

A tradition of and passion for reading is
something I love sharing with my kiddos...
We love the Icelandic tradition
of the Yule book flood where you give your

loved ones books to read on Christmas Eve!
Happy jólabókaflóð!

Happy Yule!

Yesterday, we celebrated the Winter Solstice by giving back to nature. This lovely gift is hanging in our lilac trees above our bird pub.  It's a fun tradition to decorate a tree outside with edible treats for wild life.  This morning we woke to a thick covering of a lovely blanket of fresh, white snow!

Happy Yule!
This day celebrates the rebirth of the sun to the earth after celebrating the longest night of the year (Winter Solstice).
It is a time of leaving any regrets in the past and awakening to new goals.  The best time to plan resolutions and carry them through the new year♥

It's the Winter Solstice♥

Our home is celebrating the Winter Solstice by giving back to nature. This lovely gift is hanging in our lilac trees above our bird pub.  It's a fun tradition to decorate a tree outside with edible treats for wild life.

Going for a solstice walk is a great way to spend this astronomical event.  Talking about the longest night and it's significance as we explore the newness of the winter season is a pleasurable way to spend the day.  A little further down is the science activity we share with the kiddos, along with some winter solstice poetry.  Embracing the darkness and celebrating the return of the light, we wish you love, peace and joy this Winter Solstice♥

Winter Solstice science with our kiddos:)
Winter Solstice is the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere with the fewest hours of daylight.
The North Pole is tilted the farthest from the sun.

Winter Hygge includes books books books♥

Staying in and curling up with a good book♥

Winter came down to our home one night
Quietly pirouetting in on silvery-toed slippers of snow,
And we, we were children once again...

Put your love in a poem
Roses are red.
Put your love in a letter,
Words never said.
Whisper love

When you're feeling shy.
Sing of love,
And the world will cry.
Save your love for a present,
Give it away.
The perfect gift
For Christmas Day.

I'm a little penguin
Just a few days old,
Trying to keep warm
In the Antarctic cold.
Mom and Dad care for me
...By giving me heat.
Watch me as I sit upon
Their nice warm feet.
