DRAGONFLY COVE

Sharing the unique experiences, ideas and inspirations enriching our lives and the children in our care.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass... it's about getting out there and dancing in the rain♥

Dragonfly Cove is dedicated to all the kiddos in our lives:D You will see various pictures of our kiddos learning through play in their "every day" life♥ We love to see your comments and thoughts!:D

Here is an excerpt from "How Does Learning Happen? Ontario’s Pedagogy for the Early Years" which directly pertains to our blog here:)
"a means of sharing perspectives with parents and colleagues. When families and others are invited to contribute to the documentation and share their own interpretations, it can provide even more insights that children, educators, and families can return to, reflect on, and remember in order to extend learning."

Thanks so much for making this shared journey so memorable and so very special... lots of love♥

Changing Seasons♥

School is in full swing and the kids are enjoying riding the bus from our country home.  We were worried;)  Fall was beautiful.... I say was because all the leaves have fallen now and there is often a crispness in the air that tells you snow is coming.  Here are a couple of shots of our back yard when fall was in bloom:)
This is a picture of my little family on our front steps♥  We're expecting and in the spring we won't fit on the steps for a photo like this... I could get our youngest to hold the new baby for the picture... if he'll stay still:D  Easter photo planning perhaps;)
We've started decorating for the holiday season and are still counting our blessings with that Thanksgiving feeling still in our hearts.  Here we see a couple of pictures of our mantel being decorated.
Now that we've decorated the tree and have hung the stockings by the chimney with care... it's time to take more photos and continue to count our blessings... my favourite holiday season has begun and we are truly blessed♥

Unique

"As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has—or ever will have—something inside that is unique to all time. It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression." Fred Rogers

2012 Autumn, back to school and big changes...

2012 Autumn, back to school and big changes...

The kids are heading to a new school, embarking on a promising new year of learning and growing.  We had an extremely busy summer with the purchase of our beautiful new home in the country.  The kids feel like we moved into the forest or a park with all space and mature trees.  We feel so very blessed... words can't express how happy and content we are here.   We have much to be thankful for heading into the season of Thanksgiving♥
Where we love is home
Home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
As always, back to school remains ever bitter-sweet as I miss my sweet babes as they go off on their own adventures.  We enjoyed the summer reading program at the library and always had volumes to read under our shady trees.  Autumn is almost upon us once again and I like to pack a short poem as a small piece of home to take with them when they go to school.

Autumn Bird Song
Over the housetops,
Over the trees,
Winging their way
In a stiff fall breeze.

A flock of birds
Is flying along
Southward, for winter,
Singing a song.

Singing a song
They all like to sing,
"We'll see you again
When it's spring, spring, spring."
Autumn Wind
When autumn wind goes running
It does some magic things.
It gives the shadows dancing shoes,
It gives the bright leaves wings -
When autumn wind goes running.

It curls the bonfire's tail of smoke
And shares a little whispered joke
With cornstalks who delight to prattle,
It turns a seed pod into a rattle -
When autumn wind goes running.

An Autumn Greeting

"Come," said the Wind to the Leaves one day.
"Come over the meadow and we will play.
Put on your dresses of red and gold.
For summer is gone and the days grow cold."

Spring Renewal...

Even though there is snow on the ground and we still go sledding each day after school lessons are done... my mind turns to spring and renewal.  I've suffered profound losses over the past few months... my Grandmother and then... my unborn baby.

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.  There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature— the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter."
-   Rachel Carson

It is comforting to return to the hope and renewal of spring.  There is something rather cathartic about spring clean and shedding excess winter clutter, dust and to lift and eliminate all that weighs us down.

Faith to light the darkened sky
Strength to carry on
Love to touch and heal the soul
Hope to grace the dawn

I also think of the children as we are preparing for spring and poetry lightens and inspires them as well... here are some of the resources I use for the kids during spring...

I hope you and yours will also find renewal this spring and find joy in each new day♥

Tracking Precipitation in 2011 with kids...

What a wonderful snowy start to 2011.  We've been out sledding, following tracks and discovering which snow is the best snowman snow♥
I thought this year as an ongoing and creative experiment, we'd track precipitation in 2011.
In the summer we will be collecting precipitation for quantitative measurements for our data recording sheets.
For January we are starting a weather tree.  I like Se7en's Weather Tree at
I did make modifications to ours naming the rain portion as precipitation.  We have many kinds of precipitation here in Canada taking the forms of rain, snow, hail etc. and the label should encompass all these forms of precipitation.
It's also important to be teaching terminology when you are recording data and let them record the data and make predictions based on the weather forecast and their prior experience.
I am very fond of DLTK's water cycle education format and these printables are worth the venture to the site... http://www.kidzone.ws/water/index.html.
